Mighty Oak Award: Small Moments, Lasting Impact

At Mile Bluff Medical Center, exceptional care comes in many forms. The Mighty Oak Award was created to recognize team members across the organization—whether they are providing direct patient care, supporting care behind the scenes, or serving patients through essential services—who consistently go above and beyond to create a positive experience.

This award honors individuals who demonstrate:

• Compassion, empathy, and professionalism
• Efforts that exceed normal job expectations
• A meaningful impact on patient care, comfort, or satisfaction

Like the strong and steady oak tree, these individuals build a lasting foundation of support, trust, and excellence for every patient they serve.

Our very first Mighty Oak Award recipient, Tami Henkel, a receptionist in our Speech Therapy Department, exemplifies these qualities in a deeply meaningful way.

A Connection That Changed Everything

For one young patient in our speech pathology program, attending therapy wasn’t always easy. Beginning services at just three years old, there were times when participation felt challenging.

Behind his progress has been the dedication and expertise of his speech pathologist, Abigail Moring, who helped guide him from being non-speaking to finding his voice—an incredible milestone in his journey.

But alongside that clinical care, something simple—and powerful—helped change his experience.

Before one session, Tami and the patient connected over a shared interest—BUBBL’R drinks and their favorite flavors. What may have seemed like a small moment quickly became something much more.

The following week, the patient remembered that connection and asked if he could bring a BUBBL’R to share. From there, a new tradition began.

Now, every appointment starts with five special minutes of conversation and a shared drink—something this young boy eagerly looks forward to.

Growth Beyond Expectations

This connection has had a profound impact—far beyond what might be expected from a brief interaction at the front desk.

Because of the welcoming and genuine relationship built by Tami, this young patient has:

• Strengthened his conversational speech
• Developed pre-planning skills
• Built empathy and social connection
• Regained a positive outlook on therapy
• Increased active participation
• Improved flexibility when routines change

Even outside of therapy, the impact continues. He has begun exploring new tastes, trying different BUBBL'R flavors, and even expanding his willingness to try new foods—an important milestone in his journey.

Compassion at Every Step of the Journey

This patient’s journey includes navigating autism, sensory processing differences, anxiety, and other challenges. His progress is a testament to the combined impact of skilled clinical care and meaningful human connection.

While Abigail continues to provide the therapeutic expertise that supports his communication growth, Tami has played a vital role in making the entire experience feel safe, positive, and something to look forward to.

Most importantly, he now feels truly seen, welcomed, and valued.
